Canine herpes virus and canine minute virus: a cross sectional study among breeding dogs in Germany.

The objective of the cross sectional study was to determine the seroprevalence of canine herpesvirus (CHV) and canine minute virus (CMV) among German breeding dogs. 429 serum samples were collected and analysed between March 2004 and October 2005 using serum neutralization test for CHV and indirect immunofluorescence for CMV antibodies. 37, 34, 16 and 37 vaginal, tracheal, semen and stillbirth samples, respectively, from 14 different litters were tested using PCR and virus isolation for CHV and CMV. Results revealed that the overall seroprevalence for CHV and CMV were 27.7% (119/429) and 5.7% (24/429), respectively. A significant correlation was observed between gender and seroprevalence for CHV. CMV seropositive dogs was higher in large kennels. Clinical samples analysed by PCR were all negative for CHV and CMV. It is concluded that CMV is less prevalent in Germany.
