The use and availability of antifibrinolytic agents can save lives and decrease morbidity and mortality in a wide variety of bleeding patients. Fibrinolysis occurs as a natural progression of clot formation and breakdown in the body, and allows restoration of blood flow to areas, following repair of vascular endothelial injury. Components of fibrinolysis are integrated into the fibrin matrix, and allow precise orchestration of the dissolution of the clot. Excessive or inappropriate fibrinolysis can lead to hemorrhage, and inhibition of fibrinolysis can be used strategically to stabilize clots.
