Tin can form very stable compounds with carbon containing 1-4 tin-carbon bonds, The diverse properties of organotin compounds make them very versatile and useful in diverse commercial applications, such as catalysis and rubber compounding. Because of their facile ability to coordinate to, react with and add to many functional groups, such as alcohols and acids, organotin compounds have found increasing use as esterification, transesterification and polycondensation catalysts for the commercial manufacture of specialty and commodity organic esters, and polyester resins. Several dialkyl tin dicarboxylates, that are soluble in polyurethane systems, catalyse the glycol-isocyanate reaction as well as the condensation of the urethane in polyurethane foam manufacture, enabling the preparation of large foamed continuous slabs in a one-step semi-continuous process. Such dialkyl tin dicarboxylates also catalyse the curing of thermosetting silicone resins that are widely used in paper release coatings. One such compound, dioctyl-bis(2-ethylhexylmaleate)tin (see Figure below), showed some variability in catalytic applications, so an investigation using thermal and spectroscopic methods was undertaken, which revealed some unusual and very interesting results that will be discussed in this presentation.
