This paper proposes a customized new design method for STATCOM additional damping controller. Wide-area signals introduced through Wide Area Measurement System (WAMS) result in time delay problems in the process of transmission and processing, which will inevitably deteriorate system performances or even destroy the stability of the system. Design of STATCOM additional damping controller can be expressed as control problem of delay output feedback. Then, based on the direct feedback linearization theory, robust control theory and the design of state observer, the controller parameters are set through free weighing matrix method and pole placement method. Finally, a typical two-area and four-machine power system is used for system simulation, the results of which show that the designed controller is not only inhibits inter-area low-frequency oscillation obviously, but also is robust to various operating conditions and time delay.
