The performance of the wind turbine speed control system can be unexpected if there are faults in its component, such as offset and sensitivity error in its speed sensor. These minor faults may become major faults if there is no treatment for this problem. This paper proposes a fault tolerant speed control system for a wind turbine that has ability to tolerate the minor faults in its speed sensor. The studied system is operated in Region 2. The controllers are a torque control and a pitch control. Both controllers generate control signals based on the speed sensor results using proportional - integral (PI) algorithm. Sensor faults are estimated by an extended state observer that uses a filter version of the measurement result as a new state. The fault estimate then is fed to compensation mechanism in order to correct measurement value for the controller. So the nominal control can generate a correct control signal that tracks the speed reference.
