Permeation through acetic acid permselective zeolite membranes

Acetic acid has been used as an important chemical. Distillation is one of the separation methods to dehydrate of acetic acid. However, it consumes a large amount of energy due to the low relative volatility between acetic acid and water. Combination of distillation and membrane can be the solution to reduce the separation energy. Hydrophobic MFI membranes have potential to separate acetic acid from water. MFI membranes have been mainly prepared on porous alumina substrates. Al might be dissolved from the alumina substrates to the zeolite layer during the synthesis procedures. Amounts of Al in zeolite structure are the key factor for adsorption properties. Here, MFI zeolite membranes were prepared on silica substrates. The membranes showed the excellent gas permselectivity [1]. In this study, MFI zeolite membranes on porous silica substrate were applied for the concentration of acetic acid vapor. Effects of Al in membranes were investigated.
