Pyridone derivatives, particularly 2-pyridones, are an important class of compounds in pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry. To date, various reports of C5- and C6-selective functionalization of 2-pyridones had been reported. However, despite having a relatively high electron density, C-H functionalization of the C3 position has been less explored. In our recent study, the corresponding alkyl and aryl radicals are proposed to be key intermediates for the high C3-selectivity. However, these reactions require high temperature and excessive amounts of reagents, and therefore, further improvements are desired.
