The automatic inspecting of luggage dimension is one of the problems in the self-service baggage check-in system. To solve this problem, a laser scanning system of luggage dimension measurement was constructed and an algorithm of checking airline luggage dimension based on cube-fitting was proposed. In the preprocess, the background and noise information was filtered out from the point cloud which was captured by scanning the luggage contour. Then the point cloud was projected to the horizontal plane, and its minimum bounding rectangle is obtained through the searching method of rotating point cloud based on its center. Secondly, the point cloud was projected to the perpendicular line and was segmented by an adaptive threshold. The height of luggage handles and baggage tags was cut, while the actual height was left. Finally, many measuring experiments of different baggage were repeated many times to verify the affection of this algorithm.
