Key success factors for surveys of antimicrobial salesand use in the European Union

In 2009, the European Surveillance of Veterinary Antimicrobial Consumption (ESVAC) project was established at the European Medicines Agency following acceptance of a mandate from the European Commission issued the same year. The mandate requires the Agency to coordinate the collection of harmonised data on overall national sales and consumption of veterinary antimicrobial agents by major food-producing species in the Member States (MSs) of the European Union (EU) and to publish these data on an annual basis. Furthermore, the data should allow for comparison with data on consumption in human medicine.
