As an important basic industrial chemical, ethanol has wide applications in manyways, such as pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and chemical industry. And ethanol canbe used as an energy source instead of other sources, it has great developmentspace in the future market. Xylose isomerase (EC 5.3.1.5, XI), as one of the keyenzymes, plays a vital role in the conversion of xylose into ethanol. In this study,the xylA (1317 bp) gene encoding XI was cloned for the first time frommetagenome which contains rich genetic resources. Sequence analysis revealedthat the cloned genes were 99% identical to corresponding gene of Clostridiumphytofermentans. xylA gene was cloned successfully from metagenome.
