Objective: To know the current status of nursing care of geracomiums in Jilin province and to provide the government the evidences for establishing policies to develop the welfare institutions for elderly. Methods: The questionnaire survey and interview data such as occupancy rate, bed rotation rate, the status of the operation, nursing staff, and nursing care situation were gathered from 29 welfare institutions for the olders. Results: The administrators are too old, less well educated, and lack the scientific nursing skills and management thinking of care for the aged. Nursing staff are facing insufficient and unstable working staff and lower wage. There is lack of classified management of the bed rotation rate which limited the potential for access to the institutions for the olders. Charge differential among the institutions are too big and most of them operated at a loss. There is no uniform standard of the governments operating subsidy. Conclusion: The management team, as well as the elderly care team in the welfare institutions for the olders must be strengthened and the number of professional nurses must be improve. Rules of good management in the elderly care should be established gradually in the future.
