In the petroleum refinery and petrochemical industry, mixture of C4 olefins, including linear butenes and isobutene, are produced from fluid catalytic cracking of heavy oil and steam cracking of naphtha. For effective utilization of C4 olefins, isobutene must be separated from the mixture. Preferential oligomerization of isobutene, meaning that isobutene rather than linear butenes reacts preferentially in a mixture of butenes over solid acid catalysts (Eq. 1), is an attractive method for the separation from an environmental point of view and has been commercialized by using SiO2-Al2O3 catalysts. However, existing catalysts have problems, including low catalytic activity and loss of linear butenes due to low selectivity.
