In recent years there has been a huge increase in the physical studies of room-temperature ionic liquids. This is due to the increased availability of the ionic liquids,and the recognition of the need for a deeper understanding of their properties for numerous applications. 5In many of these proposed uses,the interface is a critical component.To that end,several groups have initiated studies into the physical chemistry of the ionic liquid surfaces.This includes systems from fuel cells,capacitors,and batteries to solarcells,and catalytic processes.These applied systems are complicated and fundamental knowledge is needed.A major challenge here is the need for in situ analysis at the relevant interface.This is hindered by limited experimental methods,possibility of impurities in the ionic liquids the influence the surface,and even a lack of consensus on what is an ionic liquid and what defines the real interface.
