Supercapacitors (also called electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) and lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are promising and widely used materials for the important task of energy storage. Therefore, both technologies are subject of intensive research. Advantageous characteristics as energy and power density enable the utilization for particular applications. If high energy storage is required, LIBs are the material of choice due to their high energy-to-weight-ratio, lack of memory effect and low discharge when in resting state. Supercapacitors, providing a comparable lower energy density than LIBs, have a much higher power density, can be charged and recharged within a few seconds and have a long cycle life of more than 100 000 cycles. As the utilization of e.g. electronic cars becomes more and more important in times of fuel shortage, the combined use of LIBs and EDLCs with different and at the same time complementary properties is of great interest.
