The self-irradiation of plutonium lies at the center of the age-related microstructural changes. It is expected that He in plutonium can produce macroscopic effects such as swelling and embrittlement, which will lead to significant changes in microstructure and mechanical properties of the metals and alloys. Despite some research regarding He effect and radiation damage in Pu were performed, many questions remain unsolved.
