Magnesium and its alloys due to its low density, favorable biocompatibility and mechanical properties, is a potential implant material. This study focuses on the development biodegradable magnesium-zinc (Mg-Zn) and magnesium-zinc-calcium (Mg-Zn-Ca) alloys by casting technology. In vitro corrosion test were performed on the mechanically polished (MP) samples with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) at 37 °C. The surface morphology of the alloys was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), where precipitates were found on the surface of the alloys. The alloys were tested for its wettability by contact angle measurements and were hydrophobic. The cytotoxicity of the ions released during corrosion on human osteoblast cells (HOC) was evaluated by Sulforhodamine-B (SRB) assay.
