With the recent introduction in the certifications arena of schemes aiming at certifying seafood from sustainable fisheries, the market and the seafood industry have opened up to the concept of sustainable aquaculture and accepted related certification programs.Friend of the Sea (FOS) is a major certification scheme operating worldwide. It was started by private initiative of a number of environmentalists, some of them previously involved in the Dolphin-Safe tuna project of the Earth Island Institute, an NGO based in Berkley California. FOS is the only certification scheme which can potentially certify for sustainability products from both wild-catch and farmed origins.
