Nitrogen (N) is generally considered as the critical limiting factor to algae growth in marine ecosystems. Macroalgae, influenced by the nitrogen nutrients varying with seasonal oscillations and geographic settings □ play a significant role in nitrogen utilization and storage (figure 1). N storage mainly includes free amino acids, soluble proteins and photosynthetic pigments. However, endocellular N storage could be depleted after a long period of growth under nutrient oligotrophic conditions.
