Pediatric Intestinal Transplantation in the Spectrum of Gut Rehabilitation: Initial Outcomes

Introduction Intestinal failure is a challenging problem for patients, families, and clinicians. Intestinal rehabilitation units provide multidisciplinary team approaches that combine nutritional management, medical and surgical interventions, and social support for families of children with intestinal failure. As part of our integrated intestinal rehabilitation program, intestinal transplantation is offered as definitive therapy in children with short gut syndrome who fail to achieve independence from parenteral nutrition. We report our initial experience over five years including outcomes, immunosuppres-sive regimens, and complications.
