The Materials Reliability Division believes that research on carbon nanotubes and their applications can signthcantlv support economic opportunities in nanolechnology: Carbon nanotubes have a ullique set of characteristics that offer promise for a variety of nanometer scale applications. The carbon-carbon hoiid is among the strongest known atomic bonds, and produces amazing mechanical strength. Because of their outstanding (hernial conducuvit, nanotuhes are also being considered for thermal transport applications. In addition, recent reports envision nanotubes performing multiple functions in future computers: both as switching clenwnls and as interrconnections. 1t are, therefore, developing nanometer scale measurement, inanipula lion, and bonding techniques to enhance future nanometer scale devices.
