Essential features of absorption, luminescence and EPR spectra of Cr{sup}(4+) and Cr{sup}(3+) ions in chromium-doped forsterite (Cr:Mg{sub}2SiO{sub}4) have been studied. Single crystals were grown by the Czochralski technique with various content of chromium (from 0.015 to 0.97 wt % in the melt) in ambient atmosphere containing different oxygen concentrations (1-12 vol.%). Two types of samples were used: thin plates (thickness ~0.5mm) and bulk crystals (up to ~10 mm long with ~5×5 mm{sup}2 cross section).
