All Japan efforts on fundamental materials technology developments for HTS applications: focusing on RD of coated conductors

The recent activities in coated conductor development in Japan are reviewed. The project for the development has passed more than two and half years from the beginning. The development has been proceeded by the following two groups. One is aiming longer superconducting tapes using two different techniques to align buffer layer crystals even on a non-textured high strength metallic substrate which are both originally developed in Japan. It is called as a "Buffer Layer Alignment" group. The target of this group is fabrication of a YBCO tape longer than 50m in length with higher Jc than 10{sup}4A/cm{sup}2 (77K,0T). The other group is a responsible to develop the innovative processing to realize higher Jc than 10{sup}4 A/cm{sup}2 with reasonable length (1 to 10m). This group is divided further into two groups, which are "Substrate Texturing" group and "Rapid Growth Superconducting Layer" one.
