Effect of Titanium Metal Addition on The Properties of Zirconia Ceramics

Yttria-stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystal (Y-TZP) has been the focus of many studies due to its outstanding mechanical properties, and also because of its exceptional impact in the medical field, such as main implant biomaterial feature, which functions as reconstruction of harmed components of the body. Nevertheless, there has been several documented examples in recent years the collapse of the hip transplants incorporating zirconia ceramic material. This ultimately contributes to the commencement of this project where it studied Y-TZP impact when it was doped with titanium (Ti) metal. The weight percentage of titanium (Ti) that has been doped to Y-TZP are as follows; Owt%, 0.1wt%, 0.3wt%, 0.5wt%, lwt%. The experiment results have been evaluated and analyzed based on the characteristics of relative density, and Vickers hardness. The endeavor that has been carried out first by mixing the powders of titanium, and Y-TZP based on the proportion of weight of titanium. The mixed powders will undergo a hydraulic bench press to get rounded shape tablets of the mixture, after that cold isostatic press (CIP) was implemented to produce a round shaped green body tablets that are called the green samples which are used for sintering. Green samples subsequently underwent a sintering process using the pressure less furnace with the specified temperature ranges of 1200°C, 1300°C, 1400°C, 1500°C. The prepared samples eventually underwent a polishing and grinding process before starting with analysis and measurement processes. From the results and analysis, an increase in the relative density of the sample when doped with 0.3wt% at 1300°C sintering temperature, and for Vickers hardness an increase has been shown at the same sintering temperature with same dopant ratio.
