Polyphase ceramics are mfd. by reaction sintering that comprises (a) mixing powders of zircon and alumina in proportions 10-63 % zircon, 90-27 % Al2O3; (b) incorporating into the mixt. a cpd. bringing into the mixt. at the reaction temp. 0.5-20 wt. % wrt. the above mixt. of an oxide of Mg, Ca or Ti, ensuring reaction of the mixt. at the densification temp.; (c) shaping the mixt.; and (d) heating the shaped mixt. to the reaction temp. of the components and holding the temp. constant until completion of reaction and densification. - The additive oxides lower the reaction temp. and favour densification of the product while also providing new ceramic compositions with mixed phases based on the mullite-zirconia ceramic obtd. by reacting Al2O3 and zircon.(0/5)
