Nidec Next Generation Electric Traction Motor

As a world leading electric motor manufacturer, Nidec is now entering the field of electric traction motors for hybrid and electric vehicles. Nidec's next generation electric traction motor shows a high power density thanks to a novel automated production technique by inserting round wire slits radially into the stator slots. This gives a high fill factor of the copper inside the slots as well as low coil ends compared to axial insertion which is the more commonly used technique on electric motors with distributed round wire windings. Furthermore, the permanent magnet rotor design results in a high efficiency and compact design. The motor is included in Nidec's own e-Axle that is introduced to the market in May 2019 and presented in this paper.
