Effect of Chronic Lead Exposure on Bone Using ATR-FTIR Spectroscopy

Lead is heavy metal that is toxic for the bones and cause osteoporosis. The pathomechanism of osteoporosis due to lead is still unclear, which that was the reason this research was needed to be done. This research used 8-10 weeks old male rats 250-300 grams in weight. The rats were divided into four groups: PO = control group with Pbunexposed rats, P1 = group that the rats were exposed by 250 pnm of PbSO_4 for two weeks, P2 = group that the rats were exposed by 250 pnm of PbSO_4 for four weeks, and P3 = group that the rats were exposed by 250 pnm of PbSO_4 for six weeks. The research was conducted in Chemistry/Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, LambungMangkurat University. However, FTIR measurements were carried out in the Basic Laboratory of Math and Science Faculty of LambungMangkurat University. The obtained data were analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis test and followed by the Mann-Whitney test. The results of the research concluded that chronic lead exposure caused an increase in lead levels in bone. This condition would lead to osteoporosis.
