New Method for the Determination of the Linear Attenuation Coefficient of γ Rays in Matter

In our previous participations to the Panhellenic Physics Conference (PPC) we refer to detailed and accurate measurements of ~(60)Co γ-ray attenuation in various absorbers, that our team has performed, and their meaning as well. In the present article we extended these measurements in even more absorbers which already cover a wide range of atomic number Z_(eff), from very large values (Hg) to very small ones (H_2O). Our experiments reveal some interesting phenomena like the systematic influence of the build-up effect. This systematic behavior can be used in order to determine the linear coefficient of γ-ray attenuation in matter.
