Fossil fuels are being depleted in a rapid rate, owing to their highly increased consumption in the recent yeas across the world. In order to overcome this tiff, numbers of researches are made to discover the alternate sources of energy. Biodiesel is one of the major divisions in the field of alternate fuels. Biodiesel can be used as a substitute for fossil fuels without negotiating the Bharath and European emission norms. The use of biodiesel can reduce the fossil fuel usage to a great extent along with improved emission characteristics. This research aims to generate biodiesel from neem seed oil by base catalyzed transesterification. The neem seed oil was extracted and then converted into biodiesel. Tests were conducted to measure the property of neem seed oil methyl ester and the measured properties were found within the ASTM D 6751-03 standard limits. The neem seed oil was mixed with the conventional diesel in two diverse quantities such as B20 and B60, The performance and emission tests for the two blends of neem seed oil and diesel was done in a four stroke compression ignition engine having single cylinder. The obtained results were related with the performance achieved with the conventional diesel fuel. The obtained results shows that neem seed oil has reduced tail pipe emissions and enhanced performance compared to diesel fuel in the existing engine without any structural and volumetric modifications on the engine. The performance and emission of the extracted fuels were on par with the performance of conventional diesel fuel in all aspects.
