Biodiesel fuel has been considered as one of the effective substitutes for diesel-fuelled engines with minuscule engine modification. Despite its several advantages, it is not yet commercialized due to higher engine-out NOx emission which requires a lot of technological development and investigations in terms of performance enhancement and emission reduction. The formation mechanism of NOx is governed by the design of the combustion chamber, fuel properties, and other engine operating points. NOx is a one of the key constituents under ordination by the most governmental agencies. Hence, it is essential to abate NOx emission in order to effectively use the biodiesel fuel as an alternative to the fossil diesel fuel. This review presents the NOx emission characteristics of biodiesel fuels and several methodologies to mitigate this NOx emission.
