Five important things readers of the newly revised edition of Stainless steels and specialty alloys for pulp paper and biomass conversion mills,(SSaSAfPPaBCM)should learn about applications of stainless steels in modern pulp and paper miil equipment.Dr.Garner mentions some of these in his Introduction,(Ch.1)and I think these technological developments constitute the best reason for revising the book.1. in alkaline pulping and brown stock processes,including oxygen delignification,lean duplex stainless steel(LDSS)grades make 300-series,austenitic grades basically obsolete by virtue of the duplex grades’superior strength and wear resistance and their corrosion resistance,especially their resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking in the normal process conditions-all with no cost premium and often at lower cost! Laboratory corrosion testing shows 12Cr,’utility’grades(UNS S41003)resists corrosion in all pulping and brown stock environments,except the hottest white liquors.
