The reducer is a power transmission system that decelerates a rapid rotational speed with a high gear ratio and generates high torque. Therefore, the reducer is used for machines requiring high torque such as agricultural machines or construction machines. Recently, a compound planetary gear reducer is widely used as a reducer because it can realize a reducer with a high reduction ratio and a large torque. However, high stress was generated due to the high reduction ratio, which causes wear and pitting. Transmission error was generated by this deformation. The transmission error was caused noise and vibration which adversely affects the gear system. The purpose of this study was to analyze the transmission error of the compound planetary gear reducer using the gear analysis software, and investigated the impact of the tooth profile modification on a transmission error. PPTE (Peak to Peak Transmission Error) is one of the transmission error analysis methods, which is calculated as the difference between the maximum value and the minimum value of the transmission error. As a result, transmission errors and PPTE values of the compound planetary gear reducer were reduced when the tooth profile modification was increased. However, when the tooth profile modification is too high, the transmission error tends to increase. The reason for this is considered to be that the backlash increases and thus affects the transmission error. Therefore, it is important to find the optimum value of the transmission error by considering the backlash when the tooth profile modification was applied.
