The application of low-rank coal is limited as an energy source for small scale industry. The alternative utilization of low-rank coal is needed. One of them is the utilization of low-rank coal as a raw material in the carbon paste electrode for electrochemical sensor. Carbon paste electrode is one of the electrodes which can be easily modified and can be used widely for analysis of metal ions using voltammetry method. This research is a preliminary study to understand the process variables in modified carbon paste electrode synthesis by using high grade graphite which is necessary before applying to synthesize it using low-rank coal. The synthesized carbon paste electrode was used in the voltammetry analysis of chromium(VI) in a standard solution and water sample solution. The optimum electrode composition and measurement condition were investigated. The result of analysis showed that modified carbon paste electrode has good electrode performance with consistent signals for voltammetry analysis of chromium(VI).
