Smart electricity meters lifespan is designed more than 10 years, many reliability problems appeared in the operation field, but could not be reproduced in laboratory. We collected field failure records of smart electricity meters installed in two totally different operation environmental conditions, reliability analysis including failure modes, failure rate computation, life statistic, and failure mechanisms were conducted, and then the results were compared to the prediction results according to IEC 62380. Some existing problems were pointed out and some advices were proposed in order to improve the reliability of smart electricity meters.
