An Alternative Concept for the Common Hull Auxiliary Multi-mission Platform

The Common Hull Auxiliary Multi-mission Platform (CHAMP) RFI and Industry Day briefing material presented the concept of a single vessel design that will serve as the long-term solution for the current sealift and auxiliary fleet recapitalization efforts. The CHAMP concept is intended to unify and stabilize the U.S. Shipbuilding industrial base by combining the design requirements of five sealift and auxiliary vessel recapitalization programs into a common hull. This concept is further leveraged by the use of force packages and flexible/portable facilities. This concept minimizes non-recurring engineering cost at the expense of increased acquisition cost, reduced fleet transport efficiency and sets limits on the number of potential builders due to the size of the resulting hull. This paper presents an alternative platform approach to the CHAMP concept.
