摘要

Protection from disease-causing organisms is critical to the survival of cattle in all production systems. Vaccination has developed as an important component of biological risk management strategies to protect cattle from important pathogens. The mechanism that underpins vaccination is the induction of a targeted, long-lasting immune response without development of the pathology that typically accompanies natural infection. Despite efforts to minimize negative consequences associated with vaccination, many examples of adverse events have been associated with vaccination in cattle production systems. To harness the risk management potential of vaccination requires thoughtful consideration of factors that influence the strength of protection and therisk of side effects. The objective of these proceedings is to review immune function as it relates to vaccination.
