Two Weeks to Recovery: Dusty's Post Arrest Story

Two days before Christmas, a Good Samaritan brought a small, dirty, crusty-eyed 6-week-old kitten into the hospital. Dusty came home with me on Christmas Day. She was diagnosed with a congenital ocular deformity caused by in utero feline herpes virusinjection resulting in blindness in both eyes. Due to the poor long-term prognosis, bilateral enucleation was advised.Bilateral enucleation surgery was scheduled when Dusty was 12 weeks old. The surgeon agreed that her eyes were abnormal, and during the surgery had difficulty ligating the optic nerves and associated vessels. At the conclusion of the surgery, the technician noted that Dusty was apneic, and a heart rate could not be determined. Resuscitation efforts were begun, and I am glad to say that they were successful. It was estimated that she was hypoxic for 2 minutes or less.
