摘要

Hemodynamic recording is an essential aspect of managing the cardiovascular patient during cardiac catheterization. The evolution of pressure measurement dates back to the early 18 th century. The first catheterization and pressure measurement performed on a living animal was by Stephen Hales in 1711. English physiologist Hales placed a brass pipe through the jugular vein and carotid artery of a horse, and using the pipe as the catheter connected to a long glass tube, reported the column rose to over9 feet.1-2 In the mid-1800s, Claude Bernard was the first to accurately record intracardiac pressure by performing right heart catheterization in a dog.1-2 The early scientific work of pressure measurement led to additional discoveries of blood flow quantification, most notably by Adolph Fick, who later published the formula for calculation of cardiac output.
