This paper presents approaches in the control strategy of permanent magnet traction drives to increase both efficiency and dynamics. Starting with a short derivation of the general system equations of the permanent magnet synchronous machine, the focus is set on saturation characteristics of highly utilized drives and their impact on the dynamics of the current control paths. Improvements of the classic Pl-type field oriented current control scheme are introduced, which realize a highly dynamic current control even in case of strongly nonlinear magnetics. Additionally, the determination of current set-points for desired torques is described, focused on possible increases of both power and efficiency by reducing the control reserve. The results of the described methods are presented by means of measurement results on a prototype drive system, consisting of an automotive inverter and a traction drive.
