Retrofitting a Roughing Filter/Activated Sludge Plant for Continuous Ammonia Removal (<1 mg/L)

To more effectively remove ammonia to ensure a reliable recycled water supply to a nearby refinery, West County Wastewater District (WCWD) implemented a nutrient removal project. The project involved creative reconfiguration of existing assets (e.g., addition of seismically-safe baffles) and coordination with several other ongoing plant projects. WCWD is now well-positioned to maximize its water reuse to leverage regional potable water supplies and to comply with anticipated nutrient regulations for the San Francisco Bay.
