Taiwan has abundant offshore wind resource especially in the region of the Taiwan Strait. According to the investigation by 4C Offshore, the top ten offshore wind farms are all located here. To best utilize the resource, Taiwan government announced a relative high feed-in-tariff price and is now attracting Investors and developers worldwide like Orsted, WPD, and CIP to participate in the development of Taiwan's offshore wind power. The policy aims at a total of 3,000 MW installed offshore capacity by 2025. However, the wind turbine structure here also faces the threat of typhoon (tropical cyclone). Typhoon passed the strait frequently and with the increasing strength due to the changing climate recent years. In 2014, there were 6 out of 21 turbines in an onshore wind farm break down due to the typhoon Soudelor. So, Typhoon is still an unpredicted issue to the wind turbine. This article calculated and analyzed the extreme load of a 5MW offshore wind turbine to see the impact of this particular weather condition.
