The main-board of Multi-parameter Patient Monitor equipment that is used for measuring life parameters is consists of 8 modules, such as Electrocardiograph (ECG) module, Non-Invade Blood Pressure/Invade Blood Pressure (NIBP/IBP) module, Oximeter module, Respiration (RESP) module, and Dual-Temperature module etc. It needs an extended I/O module to do data processing; packaging and protocol transfer so that the PC which has a single serial port can communicate with the 8 modules. The aim of this paper is to discuss the hardware and software design method of this I/O extended module in detail, which is implemented using a synchronism communication unit of TL16C554 controlled by microcontroller 89C52 after analyzing capability and registers of TL16C554 and the communication time between microcontroller and computer. The research proves that this system can gain a quite low transmission error rate with compact circuit structure and good compatibility.
