Improvement of cordless drill using DFMA and sustainable design approach

In order to more effectively tackle the problem of part count reduction and improve the aspect of sustainability, this paper is prepared to present the works on applying Design for Manufacturing Assembly (DFMA) and Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to reduce components and improve the sustainability of the left and right cover parts of cordless drill. Results proved that the design efficiency reduced after applying DFMA (1.7% design efficiency improvement), whereas the LCA showed that the weight had been reduced to 19.44 % for left component whereas the right part has decreased to 19.21%. Water eutrophication has also reduced down to 35% and 38 % respectively. The combination of both approaches shows an effective means of improvising the design efficiency as well as its sustainability.
