Biosynthesis of schizophyllan via solid state fermentation

After each harvesting season, rice straws are disposed via open burning which caused air pollution. To reduce the air pollution caused by open burning, bio valorisation of rice straw via solid state fermentation was carried in this research to biosynthesis schizophyllan. Isolate UTAR A1 was identified as Schizophyllum commune UTARA1 based on its 18S rDNA. From the preliminary screening, the results showed that rice straw is a promissing biomass for the synthesis of schizophyllan and its maximum production was observed on Day 19. Design Expert 7.0.0 was used to screen for the variables that affect the production of schizophyllan. Based on the analysis of variance (ANOVA), the model terms are significant as the p-value is less than 0.05. Among the parameter tested, weight of substrate (p-value 0.0021) has a negative impact on the production, while there was correlation between inoculum size and moisture to substrate ratio with a p-value of 0.0249. In conclusion, this research shows there were correlation between factors in this optimization of schizophyllan production research via the 2-level factorial design.
