Stifle luxation or derangement is an uncommon but potentially devastating event. It occurs as a result of failure of at least two of the primary stabilizers of the femorotibial joint, i.e. the collateral (medial and lateral) and cruciate ligaments (cranial and caudal). Multiple-ligament tear is typically associated with high-energy injuries, such as falls or vehicular trauma, and not surprisingly animals with deranged stifle frequently have concurrent injuries (e.g. thoracic trauma, bone fractures).Whenever possible, early reconstructive surgery and adequate postoperative physical therapy are recommended in order to optimize functional recovery.
