Dick Garwin, the Government and Science and the Danger Ahead~1

The first major government-sponsored science in America was very early in the new country' s history--the Lewis & Clark expedition, the Corps of Discovery, up the Missouri River and out to the West Coast. It was the brain child of Thomas Jefferson and was, for its time --1804-1806--the scientific equivalent of a moon shot. There is no greater example of government-sponsored science before nor after it until the Manhattan Project in WWII.
