Autophagy (or more specifically macroautophagy) is one of the processes involved in the degradation of superfluous or damaged proteins, lipids, or organelles. It progresses in a stepwise fashion from initiation, through isolation of membrane from theendoplasmic reticulum to enclosure of the substrate targeted for degradation within a double-membrane vesicle, the autophagosome. The autophagosome then fuses with a lysosome, and the substrate is degraded.16 The basic process was originally delineated in yeast by Yoshinori Ohsumi7 who received the 2016 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work.
