Analysis of congenital heart disease in both humans and animals cannot be successful without first knowing the normal anatomy and morphology of the cardiac segments. In the human population, the morphologic method and sequential segmental analysis have long been used to successfully analyze and diagnose both simple and complex disease. The anatomy in animals with congenital heart disease can be very closely compared to those defects seen in the human population allowing for the classifications to bestudied along the same line. This review will look at the value of the morphologic method and sequential segmental analysis as it relates to the diagnosis of congenital heart disease and the comparative anatomy of malformations in both the human and animal population.
