Cutting and High Pressure Balloon Valvuloplasty for Dysplastic Pulmonary Valve Stenosis in Dogs

Congenital pulmonary valve stenosis (PS) is among the most commonly diagnosed congenital heart defect of dogs.12 As in children,3 PS in dogs is described in three principal forms: (1) a dome-shaped valve with commissural fusion, (2) a dysplastic and markedly thickened valve with or without hypoplasia of one or more leaflets, and (3) hypoplasia of the pulmonary annulus.4-5 While the human form of PS is predominately that of commissural fusion, the canine form is more commonly characterized by thickened, dysplastic valves and variable hypoplasia of the pulmonary annulus.4-6-7 Without therapy, dogs with valvar PS are at risk for symptoms including exercise intolerance, syncope, sudden cardiac death, congestive heart failure, and cyanosis from a right-to-left shunt.
