This paper presents the results of a new GIS-based optimization approach for the planning of low-voltage grids, considering the existing grid equipment. The basis of the procedure is composed of two optimization approaches which are linked to each other. On the one hand, an integer optimization problem is formulated in order to achieve a cost-minimized grid expansion for the supply area of low-voltage substations. On the other hand, a heuristic is used to determine cost-minimized sites for substations and which load and feed-in points should be supplied. Based on a real grid with 43 substations and 2142 connected customers with complete GIS-based information on the low- and medium-voltage level, the practical application of the approach for different scenarios is shown.
