Optimization Study of Urban Stormwater Runoff Control BMPs Scheme Based on SUSTAIN

The "sponge city" is becoming a hotspot with increasing urban water logging and water pollution. Based on the theory of stormwater best management practices (BMPs), Guandu District in Kunming City of China was chosen as a case study site to test the suitability and cost-effectiveness of proposed method. 56 groups of optimal cost-effectiveness solutions were selected by System for Urban Stormwater Treatment and Analysis Integration (SUSTAIN), which takes BMPs' dimensions and the numbers of units as the decisive variables and constraints, and the reduction rate of annual runoff TN or TP load in the range of 80%~90% as the targets. Our results showed the optimized scheme to achieve the 85% reduction rate of TN or TP with the total cost of 2.116 million RMB for TN, and 1.03 million RMB for TP. In addition, green roof has less reduction efficiency of pollutant load compared to other standalone BMPs and the expansion of sunken green space in large areas should be the preferred solution to control the runoff TN or TP load in the scale of residential areas. The results give implications in rainfall control of residential area and optimum layout of BMPs scheme.
